On July 9th and August 20th TSO SI participated in Staten Island’s Back-to-the-Beach festival. The festival is presented by Borough President James Molinaro. It is an opportunity for Staten Islanders to enjoy the beach, boardwalk, and learn about various organizations. Carolyn Bernet, Outreach Chairperson, of TSO-SI spearheaded our participation. TSO SI officers and members, Joan Gottesman, Rita Grenata, Michael Marten, Marietta & Joe Vaccaro and Joan Gagliano also were on hand to promote organ donation awareness.

TSO SI Outreach also plans on attending a free kidney Public Health Screening which is being offered by the National Kidney Foundation. The screening is part of the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Early Evaluation Program. It is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 16 th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at St. M ary of the Assumption Church.

Several members from TSO Staten Island were on hand at a flag ceremony at Staten Island University Hospital on Friday, April 1st. The event was attended by several hospital employees and other community members. Hospital employees who were organ donors spoke about their donation experience. Mona Shriver, a TSO SI member and wife of Jay Shriver, liver recipient spoke about Jay's transplant experience.

At our April meeting. we assembled awareness ribbons for distribution to the community and made plans for distribution.

A representative from Sid Paterson Advertising, Inc. spoke with the group in March regarding a commercial project which is in development. The company, inconjunction with Bay Ridge Automotive, will develop a 30 second commercial regarding the need for organ and tissue donation. The commercial will be aired on the score board at Brooklyn's Cyclone Stadium. TSO Staten Island is thankful to Sid Paterson and Giuffre Motors for spreading awareness to the Cyclone's sell out crowds of 7,600 fans!

  2004 Transplant Cup Regatta

The 2004 Transplant Cup Regatta was held on May 15th and 16th at Richmond County Yacht Club in Staten Island, NY.

Fourteen J-24 sailboats competed in the 2 day event.  Doug Olsen, kidney recipient, skippered his boat, Outer Limits to a 9th place finish.  Doug's brother and kidney donor Jeff Olsen served as tactician on Rabbit Season which finished in 7th place.  First place was captured by Tramp , skippered by Mark May.

TSO members, Bill Benson (heart recipient),  Joan Gottesman (liver recipient), and Rita (heart recipient) and Jerry Granata were on hand Saturday morning to speak with the sailors about their transplant experiences and to emphasize the need for organ and tissue donation.

While this year's regatta raised money for TSO, more importantly it stressed the importance of donation to the 80 sailors and race personnel who were on hand. The Staten Island Advance covered the event and wrote an excellent front page article in their Health Section about donor awareness, extending the reach of the event to thousands.
